Envitech Solutions has the expertise to carry out landfill gas monitoring, modelling and the installation of landfill gas extraction systems. Projects include landfill gas management systems for environmental protection and feasibility studies for landfill gas utilisation and Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Projects.
Envitech Solutions is the South African representative for Organics Group (UK)(specialists in the design, manufacture, installation and operation of landfill gas, leachate treatment, and Energy-from- Waste systems).
Landfill Gas Flaring
Envitech Solutions has a proven track record in the development and management of landfill gas extraction and utilisation systems, and is the first company to successfully construct, operate and manage a landfill gas-to-electricity CDM project in Africa (the Durban/World Bank project for eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, Durban, South Africa). Currently, Envitech Solutions is responsible for the operation & maintenance of gas extraction & flaring systems on five large landfills in South Africa.
Envitech Solutions' capabilities include:
• Landfill gas monitoring in accordance with international standards, including the Minimum Requirements for Waste Disposal by Landfill (DWAF). Activities include
- Installation of gas wells/boreholes and monitoring systems
- Development and compilation of monitoring plans
- Auditing and monitoring of landfill sites
- Reviewing the monitoring results and making appropriate recommendations
• Landfill gas modelling in accordance with international models.
- Installation of gas wells and conducting pumping trials
- Determining sustainable gas yields using appropriate software (GasSim or LandGEM)
- Calibration with Organics' in-house multi-phase model
• Landfill gas extraction and flaring systems - the design and installation of landfill gas recovery systems is carried out to cater for
- Cut-off curtain wells for environmental protection and gas migration prevention
- Production wells for maximum gas recovery and utilisation
- Gas wells designed for the simultaneous extraction of landfill gas and leachate
- Flaring systems designed to international standards
• Alternative uses of landfill gas are investigated and appropriate systems can be designed and installed for the following:
- Power generation plants
- Thermal energy uses such as boilers and kilns
- Liquid fuels for vehicles
• CDM and carbon finance assessments - evaluations are carried out in accordance with the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol and include:
- Baseline determinations including conditions of additionality
- Monitoring and verification protocols as required for CDM projects
- Financial assessments based on project costs and the sale of emission reductions (ER's)
